FAQ - Solution Development
1. Who is eligible to select challenge statements for development?
There are two (2) categories for this Challenge- Open Category and School Category.
For the Open Category, the Challenge is open to all citizens and permanent residents of Singapore and persons with valid employment passes, work permits and valid student visas in Singapore, except:
a. all SLA employees (whether employed on a permanent, contract, temporary or other basis);
b. all officers seconded to SLA;
immediate family members of all the persons described in (a) and (b) above.
For the School Category, the Challenge is open to all students who are enrolled on a full-time basis at ─
2. Is there any age limit for the participants?
There is no age limit. However, if the participants are below 18 years, please download and send the completed parent consent form to [email protected].
3. Is there a charge to participate?
No. Participation is free.
4. How many category are available?
No. Each participant is only eligible to register for one (1) team.
5. How many people are allowed in a team?
All teams should have 1 to 4 people.
6. Do participants need to be able to code to participate?
We welcome people with different skillsets. SLA will be providing training workshops and materials to help the participants to kick start the solutions development.
7. Can participants select multiple challenge statements and submit multiple solutions?
Participants are welcome to submit multiple entries but each participating team will only be eligible for one (1) prize.
8. What kind of workshops will SLA provide?
SLA’s geospatial specialists will provide the New OneMap API workshop. A series of technical workshops will also be conducted by Content Partners to equip participants with the basic geospatial knowledge and tools to address the challenge statements.
9. Are the participants free to use any technologies?
Yes, the participants are free to use any technologies.
10. Will data be provided for the participants?
Yes, participants can refer to the list of data available for OneMap IdeaWorks! at the resource page. Follow the instructions provided in the page to access the data.
11. Are the participants free to use external datasets?
Yes, the participants are free to use any external datasets that complement with the open geospatial data provided for OneMap IdeaWorks!. The participants shall be responsible appropriate use of these external datasets, subject to the originators’ terms and conditions.
12. When is the closing date for the registration for the solution development?
We invite technologists, data scientists, analysts, startups and students to register for solution development starting 20 July 2017. The last day for the registration is by 11.59 p.m. on 18 Aug 2017.
13. Is the attendance at the Meet Up 1, Meet Up 2 and technical workshops mandatory?
Attendance is not mandatory, but it is highly encouraged to interact with the community partners and other participants.
14. What is the Meet Up 1 about?
During the Meet up 1, we will introduce the community partners to the participants. This is a mingling session that participants can understand more about the challenge statements, get to know other participants and form teams.
15. Who owns the Intellectual Property (IP) Rights of the developed apps and solutions?
Please see “Intellectual Property and Personal Data” in the Terms and Conditions.
16. What should the participants build?
The participants can build web or mobile application in the language and platform of their choice that make use of the New OneMap platform. The participants can also create interactive web map with analyses. New OneMap basemap is to be used as foundation layers in the web apps, mobile apps or web maps.
17. Post IdeaWorks, what are the plans for the developed apps and solutions?
Since the IP of the solutions rests with the participants, they can decide what they wish to do – donate or commercialise it. Community organisations and participants can opt to continue their collaboration for the implementation and delivery of the solutions to the end beneficiaries. Citing Food from the Heart as an example, the participants donated the app and its IP rights to the non-profit organisation.
18. When will be the submission of the solutions?
The participants are required to submit the solutions by 5th October 2017.
19. What should the participants submit for the challenge?
The participants are required to submit web app, mobile app or interactive web map AND a 2-3 minutes long of video describing the solution.
20. What is the judging criteria?
21. Will it be an open or closed judging?
It will be a closed judging.
22. When will the judging take place?
The judging will be held on 9 October 2017.
23. Are participants required to do oral presentation to the judges?
Yes, the participants are required to attend the judging session and give an oral presentation as well as demonstrate the solution to the panel of judges.
24. What are the oral presentations like?
The participants will have 10 minutes to present the solutions to the panel of judges. Presentation aids such as slide presentation, storyboard, video and others are allowed to communicate the ideas and findings. Participants shall also demonstrate the features and capabilities of the functional application.
25. When and how will the winners be notified?
Results will be announced on event day on 12 October and will later be published on the microsite at ideaworks.onemap.sg.
26. Are participants required to showcase their solutions on event day on 12 October and is the attendance compulsory?
Each team with at least one team member present is required to showcase the solutions on event day on 12 October.
27. Will the participants receive certificate?
Yes, the participants will receive certificate of participation.

- any local primary school, secondary school, junior college, polytechnic, Institute of Technical Education, university or tertiary institution at an undergraduate level or lower; or
- any foreign system schools at the equivalent of primary school level or higher.

- Value/Usefulness/Impact (40%)
- Sustainability (30%), e.g. ease of maintenance and deployment, and relevance over time
